The ������������ Black Student Union recently hosted an essay contest for local high school students in celebration of Black History Month

The essay prompt was “Discuss the effects of education upon modifying long standing stereotypical beliefs and behaviors toward minority groups.”

Essay contest winners are, from left: second place, “Education isn’t as deep as it should be nowadays” by Esther Pope of Graceville High School; first place, “Education in the black community” by Aniya Lewis of Graceville High School; third place, “Eliminating Longstanding Stereotypes” by Lauren Jackson of Graceville High School.

Soren Eastwood of Blountstown High School submitted an original poem called, “Color of my Skin.” In honor of her exceptional work, the judges created the “Soren Eastwood Extra Mile Award.” Eastwood will receive a trophy, certificate and participation certificate.
